Summer Precautions for Your Pets

  1. Heat-Heatstroke is very common (and preventable) in pets during the summer months. Make sure your pet always has access to a cool, shady area and fresh water. Dogs that have shorter noses can be more prone to heatstroke in hot and humid conditions, so when in doubt keep your pet indoors.
  2. Dog Parks- Injuries from dog parks can happen in the blink of an eye. Follow these tips to keep you and you pooch safe at the park:
    • Know their friends- Getting to know the other dogs that play there can help you determine if their play style will be more compatible with your pets.
    • Know the lay of the land- It is always a good idea to know where to go in case of an emergency or fight. Also, check to make sure there aren’t any areas where your pet could escape when
    • Always stay on watch-
    • Stay protected- Have a plan of action of what to do if something happens. Always be prepared for things to go wrong so you can easily spring into action.
  3. Cars- NEVER leave your pet in a car, plain and simple. Dogs are unable to sweat, like humans, to get rid of their body heat. If you see a dog in a car on a hot day, try to find the owners first and if you cannot, you can call your local police department for help.
  4. Thunderstorms- If your pet has a fear of thunderstorms, try to distract him with the tv or radio. You can also keep him in a quieter area of the house. Some pets do well in a crate or a darker area. Toys can also keep your pet entertained and distracted. Try filling a Kong with peanut butter and freezing it to keep them occupied. Make sure that your pet has an ID tag or better yet a microchip, just in case they become scared and bolt out the door. This gives a greater chance for reuniting with your pet.
  5. Poisons- Make sure you always pick up dropped medications off the floor and keep them in a child safe container, out of reach of your pets. Other outdoor poisons include forms of algae in ponds, compost piles, chemicals used for pools or hot tubs, poisonous toads and snakes.
