Did you know that some online pharmacies, like 1-800-petmeds, are not regulated by the FDA? This means that they do not get their prescription products directly from the manufacturer, like Veterinarians do. That also means that they can get expired product, repackage and relabel it to make it look like regular product. Online pharmacies can also buy product from other foreign countries, which can vary greatly from our product due to different pesticides and regulations. I mean, would you purchase your prescription medications online?
Another danger of purchasing through an online pharmacy is that the manufacturer’s, like Merck who produces Bravecto and Elanco who produces Trifexis, do NOT guarantee products purchased through online pharmacies. This can be a very big deal! What a manufacturer guarantee does is protect you and your pet. If your pet has been on year round heartworm prevention and comes down with heartworm disease, the company will actually help cover costs associated with the disease, as long as the product was administered properly and purchased through a licensed Veterinarian.
One story we actually witnessed first hand was one of our own patients got severely ill, to the point where we didn’t know if he would make it, all due to a dose of Bravecto that was purchased online. The dose was traced back to an origin of production in Australia! When he had been on Bravecto purchased through us in the past, he did great and no reaction, but this product they received was repackaged to look just like the ones produced in the USA. Luckily, we are happy to report that the pet is doing much better and expected to make a full recovery! 🙂
